ADOS-2 or ADI-R? How they differ and which to choose

The two instruments most often used in autism spectrum assessment. They do not compete with each other - they show two different kinds of data.

Observation or interviewPrices and formatWhen both together
In short: this is not an either-or choice

ADOS-2 shows how a person functions here and now, while ADI-R shows how their development unfolded. In thorough spectrum assessment the two are most often used together. If you have to start with one, it is usually ADOS-2.

Choose ADOS-2 if…

The starting point in most cases

  • You want to begin an assessment and do not know where to start
  • You need an evaluation of a child's or adult's current functioning
  • A counselling centre or doctor has asked for an "ADOS assessment"
  • The person assessed can attend an observation session

Add ADI-R if…

Completing the picture with developmental history

  • The picture from observation is not clear-cut
  • The early years of development matter
  • You want the fullest possible documentation for a doctor or counselling centre
  • There is no one who knows the early development in detail - then ADI-R is difficult

Why one assessment is often not enough

Autism spectrum is recognised on the basis of a pattern of functioning over time, not a single result. An observation captures one meeting, and children may behave differently in a new setting than at home or at school. A developmental interview adds the context no observation can reconstruct.

Frequently asked questions

Cannot find your answer? Call us - we will gladly clear up any doubts.

Is ADOS-2 enough to diagnose autism?

ADOS-2 alone is not a diagnosis. It is a standardised observational assessment regarded as the gold standard, but it is one element of the process. The diagnosis itself is made by a medical specialist.

How much do both assessments cost together?

ADOS-2 is PLN 650 (promotional price until the end of 2026) and ADI-R PLN 450. Whether both are needed is decided after an initial consultation (PLN 150).

Will a psychological and pedagogical counselling centre accept these assessments?

Yes. We use certified instruments, and our reports are recognised by counselling centres and medical specialists.

Can ADI-R be done without the child?

Yes. ADI-R is an interview with a parent or carer - the child does not need to attend.

In what order are these assessments carried out?

We usually begin with the parent interview, then carry out the ADOS-2 observation. If an in-depth developmental interview is needed, ADI-R follows as the next stage.
