What is childhood aphasia?

Childhood aphasia is a neurologically based disorder of speech and language development. The child has difficulty understanding or producing speech despite normal hearing. A related disorder, developmental dysphasia (also known as SLI), involves delayed and uneven speech development.

To accurately identify these difficulties, we carry out an assessment with the KOJD-AFA test (Child Language Assessment Cards, AFA version). This standardised speech-therapy tool checks how the child understands and produces speech, and which language components, such as vocabulary, grammar or sentence building, need support. We compare the result with age norms and translate it into a concrete therapy plan.

Scope of the assessment

What do we assess?

The KOJD-AFA test examines the child's language across several complementary areas, giving a full picture of strengths and difficulties.

Speech comprehension

Responding to instructions and understanding words, sentences and questions directed at the child.

Speech production

Producing utterances, naming objects and building sentences.

Vocabulary and grammar

Word resources and the correct use of language forms and structures.

Repetition and auditory memory

Reproducing words and sentences, the functions that support language learning.

A standardised tool for Polish childrenKOJD-AFA makes it possible to distinguish childhood aphasia and developmental dysphasia from other causes of delayed speech. An early, reliable diagnosis allows effective speech therapy to start quickly.
When to come in

Signs worth checking

The sooner we identify the cause of speech difficulties, the more effective therapy is. Book an assessment if you notice that your child:

  • speaks much less than peers or started speaking later
  • has difficulty understanding instructions and questions
  • builds short, simplified sentences or muddles their word order
  • has a limited vocabulary and difficulty naming things
  • does not repeat longer words or sentences
  • understands more than they can say, which frustrates them
Assessment, then therapy in one placeAfter the assessment you receive a written diagnosis with recommendations and, if needed, we move smoothly on to speech and language therapy tailored to your child.
