What is ADI-R?
ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised) is a detailed, structured interview conducted with a parent or carer of the person being assessed. It reconstructs the developmental history and everyday functioning in areas key to diagnosing the spectrum.
We most often combine it with the ADOS-2 observation to obtain a complete, reliable clinical picture. Results are provided in writing, together with a discussion and recommendations.

Three areas the interview focuses on
ADI-R links the developmental history with current functioning. Precise questions to the carer give deep insight into early childhood and the current picture of the person assessed.

Speech and language development and how the person communicates, verbally and non-verbally.
Social behaviour
Building relationships, reciprocity in contact and responding to another person.
Repetitive patterns
Routines, stereotyped behaviours and narrow, intense interests.
What is the autism spectrum?
The autism spectrum (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, builds relationships and perceives stimuli from their surroundings. The word "spectrum" reflects great diversity, as the traits and the level of support needed differ for each person.
The ADI-R interview reconstructs the developmental history in areas key to recognising the spectrum: communication, social interaction and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests. The interview alone is not a diagnosis, but one element of the process; the full diagnosis is made on the basis of the whole clinical picture.
